Holmdel, NJ - On December 15, 2009, Patrolman Michael Pigott of the Holmdel Township Police Department Traffic Safety/Crime Prevention Unit was honored by the Monmouth County Police Traffic Officers Association at an awards luncheon in Point Pleasant. Patrolman Pigott received the Kimberly Smith Ames D.W.I. Prevention Award for Outstanding Service for the Prevention of D.W.I. in Monmouth County for 2009.
The award has been offered to honor the memory and life of Kimberly Smith Ames by her parents, Edward and Carol Smith. A drunk driver in Beachwood, New Jersey tragically killed Kimberly on October 7, 1998. The crash took the life of 23-year-old Kimberly and her unborn child.
The Smith family is dedicated to reducing incidents of Driving While Intoxicated through Education and Enforcement. The award honors the hard work of a Monmouth County Police Officer who has demonstrated a strong commitment towards the effort of stopping drunk driving in their jurisdiction.
Along with thirteen drunk driving arrests, Patrolman Pigott was actively involved in the instruction of Officers in D.W.I. apprehension and of standardized field-testing of drunk drivers. Patrolman Pigott instructed at Holmdel High School and Saint John Vianney High School at the end of the year "Sudden Impact" Program and in driver education classes on prevention of drunk and drugged driving. In addition, Patrolman Pigott is the police department's only qualified Drug Recognition Expert in the apprehension of drugged drivers.
